About the initiative

We are the Bridge Generation.

We are the last generation to remember life before AI, and the first generation responsible for helping shape how humanity lives alongside it.

Our mission

To help people stay capable, connected and human in an AI-shaped world.

The Bridge Generation is a community-led initiative helping New Zealanders understand and respond to the human impacts of artificial intelligence. We believe AI is not just a technology shift — it is a human shift. And it is happening faster than most people, organisations and communities are prepared for.

While many organisations are focused on AI adoption, digital skills, productivity and workforce retraining, we focus on the things that make us human.

We do this through community conversations, public events, practical resources, storytelling and partnerships that help people understand what is changing, what matters most, and how we can prepare together.

Why it matters

The biggest challenge isn't technical.

The challenge is not simply learning how to use AI. The challenge is understanding what we may lose if we aren't intentional about preserving the things technology cannot replace.

AI is advancing rapidly across work, education, government and daily life. New Zealand's adoption of AI is growing quickly, yet trust, readiness and public understanding are struggling to keep pace.

Communication & connection

As digital tools remove friction, many everyday interactions disappear. We communicate less, negotiate less, and spend less time building relationships. Yet communication, empathy and trust remain essential human capabilities.

Cognitive dependence

AI provides instant answers, but capability still depends on curiosity, judgement and deep thinking. The risk isn't using AI. The risk is allowing AI to replace our thinking.

Identity & purpose

Many people define themselves through work, achievement and expertise. As AI reshapes jobs and careers, questions about meaning, belonging and contribution become increasingly important.

What the research tells us

Research shows younger generations increasingly value purpose, connection, wellbeing, communication, adaptability and meaningful work alongside financial security. New Zealand's AI future will not be determined by technology alone — it will be determined by how well we preserve trust, relationships, critical thinking, wisdom, community and human capability.

Our values

A New Zealand where people navigate AI with confidence, clarity, and connection.

Human first

We believe technology should serve human flourishing, not the other way around. Every conversation we have starts from that premise.

Honest and grounded

We do not catastrophise or dismiss. We engage with the real complexity of this transition — its genuine risks and its genuine opportunities.

For everyone

This conversation belongs to all New Zealanders — not just the digitally confident or the technically literate. We meet people where they are.

Community-led

Change happens in communities. We support families, workplaces, schools, iwi, and local organisations to lead their own conversations.

Long-term thinking

We are not chasing headlines. We are building the awareness and capability that will matter for the next decade and beyond.

Collaborative

No single organisation can do this alone. We actively seek partners, funders, and collaborators who share our commitment to the human side of AI.
